Heartworm disease is transmitted from dog to dog through mosquitoes. It affects thousands of dogs throughout the United States. Living in the pulmonary arteries of infected dogs, heartworm disease can be fatal if left untreated. Symptoms can include coughing, sluggishness and difficulty breathing, though some dogs may show no signs at all. Treatment is difficult and costly, and complications may occur.

Scooting refers to the act of rubbing or dragging the anal area or perineum (the area between the anus and genitals) on the ground.
